A new technology that could prevent dangerous drivers from speeding is ready for use in North Carolina, but it cannot be deployed without approval from state lawmakers. The system targets drivers with a history of reckless driving and repeated speeding violations, offering a way to physically limit how fast their vehicles can go.
Advocates for the technology argue that focusing on these high-risk individuals will save lives on the road. They also point to a secondary benefit: lowering auto insurance premiums for everyone in the state. When repeat offenders cause accidents, the costs are passed down to all policyholders. By stopping these drivers from speeding, the hope is to reduce the number of severe crashes and the financial burden they create.
The device itself works by connecting to a vehicle's onboard computer. Once installed, it can be programmed to restrict the car's speed to the legal limit. If a driver tries to exceed that limit, the system either alerts them or physically reduces the engine power. For those with multiple speeding tickets or a history of street racing, this could be a court-ordered condition of keeping their license.
However, the technology remains on the shelf until the General Assembly passes a law allowing its use. Some lawmakers have raised concerns about privacy and the potential for government overreach. Others are asking whether the system should be mandatory for all convicted speeders or only for the most egregious cases. For now, the debate continues, and the roads remain open to those who choose to drive too fast.
