JCPS bus drivers prepare for 1st day with new technology aimed at improving arrivals

All 880 buses owned by the district, including the 640 that handle daily routes, are now fitted with new tablets that give turn-by-turn directions for every stop. The move is part of a broader effort to cut down on late arrivals and reduce the confusion that often marks the first few weeks of school.

Drivers spent the summer training on the devices, which replace the old paper maps and printed route sheets. The tablets also show live traffic updates and can reroute a driver if a road is closed or a delay pops up. District officials say the goal is to give drivers more confidence, especially those covering unfamiliar neighborhoods.

The first real test comes Monday morning when students return. Transportation staff will be monitoring the system from a central dispatch office, ready to step in if a driver hits a snag. Parents have been asked to be patient during the first week, as the new technology may still have a learning curve.

One driver, who asked not to be named, said the tablet is a big change but welcomed the extra help. "The first day is always chaotic," he said. "Having the route right there on the screen takes a lot of pressure off."

The district also plans to use the data from the tablets to spot problem areas and adjust routes in real time. If the system works as intended, officials expect to see a noticeable drop in late buses by the end of September.
