The White House is putting pressure on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to move faster on a project that would equip agents with wearable identity verification technology. The initiative, often referred to as the "smart glasses" program, aims to give field officers a hands-free way to confirm a person's identity and access databases in real time.
Matthew Elliston, an assistant director at ICE, confirmed that the project remains in its early phases. He stated that the agency has not yet selected a vendor and is still evaluating potential partners for the technology. The push from the White House suggests a desire to accelerate the timeline, though Elliston offered no specific deadline for when a contract might be awarded or when testing could begin.
The concept involves lightweight eyewear that can display information and scan biometric data, such as facial features or irises. Proponents argue this could improve both efficiency and safety for officers in the field by reducing the need to handle phones or tablets during encounters. However, privacy advocates have raised concerns about the potential for mass surveillance and data misuse.
For now, ICE is focused on the procurement process. The White House's interest signals that this is a priority, but the agency still has significant groundwork to cover before any wearable ID system becomes operational.
