How Duolingo’s reaction to artificial intelligence illustrates the technology’s double-edged potential

More education technology companies are weaving artificial intelligence into their daily operations and product offerings, but the results have been far from consistent. Duolingo, the popular language-learning app, has chosen to go all in on AI, and its experience so far serves as a cautionary tale about the risks and rewards of the technology.

The company has aggressively integrated AI to personalize lessons, generate content, and even replace some human contractors. On one hand, this has allowed Duolingo to scale its services rapidly, offering more languages and adaptive learning paths without a proportional increase in staff. The AI can analyze a user's mistakes in real time and adjust the difficulty, creating a highly tailored experience that keeps users engaged.

However, the downside has been significant. The push toward automation has led to layoffs and a reliance on algorithms that sometimes produce clunky or culturally tone-deaf sentences. Users have reported odd translations and a noticeable drop in the human touch that once made the app feel quirky and fun. The AI, while efficient, lacks the nuance of a human teacher. It can drill vocabulary but struggles to explain the why behind a grammar rule in a way that feels natural.

Duolingo's situation highlights a broader truth in the edtech space: AI is a powerful tool, but it is not a perfect replacement for human judgment. Companies that rush to adopt it without considering the trade-offs risk alienating their user base. The technology can cut costs and improve speed, but it can also strip away the empathy and creativity that make learning enjoyable. For now, Duolingo's gamble shows that going all in on AI is a high-stakes bet, one that might win big or lose the very thing that made the product special.
