ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- In the searing Mediterranean summer, wildfires turn dangerous in minutes. Greece has learned that at a terrible cost. In 2018, a blaze east of Athens moved with ferocious speed, killing more than 100 people and shocking the nation. Now, the country is betting on a new frontier to prevent such disasters: space.
In a global first, Greece is deploying a dedicated satellite system to detect wildfires from orbit. The project, led by the Greek government in partnership with the German company OroraTech, aims to spot fires within minutes of ignition, long before they are visible from the ground. The system uses a constellation of small satellites equipped with infrared sensors that can see through smoke and clouds.
Michel Farah, an OroraTech software engineer, works on a replica of a wildfire-detection satellite at the company's facilities in Athens. The technology is designed to give firefighters a critical head start. Traditional methods rely on lookout towers, drone patrols, or citizen reports, which can be slow or unreliable. With satellite coverage, authorities can pinpoint the exact location of a new fire and dispatch resources immediately.
Greece has struggled with increasingly intense wildfire seasons, fueled by rising temperatures and drought. Officials hope this space-based system will change the calculus. The first satellite in the network was launched earlier this year, with more planned. If successful, the model could be adopted by other fire-prone nations around the world. For now, Greece is leading the charge, turning its scars into a strategy that reaches for the stars.
