Researchers have found that AI-assisted police reports may not be as useful as some law enforcement agencies hope. In a recent study, experienced police supervisors were asked to evaluate a set of incident reports. Some of the reports were written entirely by human officers, while others were generated or heavily assisted by artificial intelligence. The results challenge the assumption that AI can simply replace or improve human report writing in policing.
The supervisors rated the human-written reports higher in key areas like clarity, accuracy, and narrative flow. AI-generated reports often contained awkward phrasing, missing context, or a lack of logical sequence that made them harder to follow. In some cases, the AI missed subtle but important details that a trained officer would naturally include. One supervisor noted that the AI reports felt "flat" and lacked the judgment needed to prioritize what matters in a police narrative.
The findings raise questions about the rush to adopt AI tools in public safety. While AI can save time by transcribing audio or filling in templates, it may not capture the nuance required for legal documents that can end up in court. Critics argue that over-reliance on AI could lead to reports that are technically complete but practically useless for investigations or prosecutions. Police departments considering these tools are now being urged to test them more thoroughly before rolling them out widely.
