New research suggests that concerns about relying too heavily on Chinese manufacturing are shaping climate policy—and could even delay the adoption of green technologies around the world. The study highlights a growing paradox: while the rapid deployment of solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicle batteries is urgently needed, geopolitical rivalries and supply chain anxieties are causing many nations to hesitate.
China currently dominates the production of key clean energy components, controlling a vast majority of the global market for solar panels and critical mineral processing. This concentration, while having driven down costs historically, is now prompting strategic recalculations in North America and Europe. Policymakers are increasingly prioritizing domestic manufacturing and "friend-shoring" supply chains to allied nations over simply buying the cheapest and most readily available technology.
Experts warn this recalibration comes with significant short-term costs and delays. Building parallel industrial ecosystems takes time, investment, and may result in higher-priced technologies, potentially slowing their deployment. The research indicates that without careful international coordination, the very legitimate goals of supply chain resilience and economic security could inadvertently compromise the speed of climate action. The challenge now is to balance strategic autonomy with the imperative for a rapid, global clean energy rollout to meet critical emissions targets.
