Letter: The future of fishing - when technology chooses the lure

From the letter: Today, advanced sonar allows anglers to locate fish and even watch how they react to a lure in real time. This is no longer a distant fantasy. It is the current reality on many boats, where screens display not just the bottom structure but the actual behavior of a school of bass or walleye as a jig drops past them. The technology, often called "live sonar," has transformed fishing from a patient art of reading water and weather into a data-driven science.

Anglers can now see a fish turn its head, follow a bait, and then reject it. They can swap lures instantly based on that visual feedback, rather than guessing what might work. Some argue this removes the soul from the sport, reducing it to a video game where the only skill is watching a screen. Others say it simply levels the playing field, allowing weekend fishermen to compete with guides who have spent decades on the same lake.

The real question is what happens next. If every fish can be seen and targeted, will pressure on certain species become unsustainable? Catch-and-release becomes more complicated when a fish is hooked after being watched for minutes. The future of fishing may not be about finding fish, but about choosing not to catch them. Technology has given us the lure. It is up to us to decide when to stop using it.
