Inside Roblox's new age verification technology

Inside Roblox's new age verification technology

Roblox has rolled out a new age verification system worldwide, aiming to strengthen protections for its younger users. The feature, which launched earlier this year, requires users to provide identification to access certain social features and content. The move comes as the platform faces ongoing scrutiny over child safety, with critics pointing to risks like exposure to inappropriate content and contact with strangers.

The technology uses government-issued IDs and facial matching to confirm a user's age. Once verified, players gain access to features like voice chat and experiences meant for older audiences. Roblox says the system helps keep younger users in age-appropriate spaces and gives parents more control over what their children encounter.

Vicky Nguyen of NBC News recently discussed the changes, noting that the company is trying to reassure both parents and investors that it is taking concrete steps. While the verification is optional for now, it signals a shift toward stricter accountability. Some safety advocates argue the system is a positive step but stress that no technology is foolproof. Roblox continues to face pressure to improve moderation and prevent exploitation, especially as its user base skews young. The company says it will keep refining the system based on feedback and emerging risks.
