Google DeepMind has struck a deal worth between 80 and 90 million dollars to bring on employees from the artificial intelligence startup Contextual AI and to license the company's technology, according to a person familiar with the agreement.
Douwe Kiela, who co-founded Contextual AI and serves as its CEO, is expected to join DeepMind along with more than 20 researchers from the three-year-old startup. The move signals DeepMind's continued push to strengthen its position in the fast-moving AI agent space.
Contextual AI has been focused on building systems that can understand and act on complex information, a field that has drawn increasing attention from major tech firms. The deal allows DeepMind to absorb both the talent and the underlying technology without a full acquisition of the company itself.
The agreement comes as competition for top AI researchers and engineers remains fierce among tech giants. By hiring a dedicated team and licensing their work, DeepMind gains a ready-made group of experts and access to proprietary tools that could accelerate its own development efforts. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the companies, but the source put the total payout between 80 and 90 million dollars.
