MARIETTA – History enthusiasts and tech-savvy visitors alike will soon have a new way to experience the rich heritage of Marietta. As part of a broader initiative spanning southeast Ohio, the Campus Martius Museum and the historic Ohio Company Land Office are set to be reimagined this fall through an innovative augmented reality (AR) program. This digital transformation will allow guests to step back in time without leaving the present moment.
The project will utilize QR codes strategically placed near key historic landmarks. By simply scanning these codes with their smartphone cameras, visitors will unlock a digital overlay that brings the past to life. Instead of relying solely on static exhibits or informational plaques, users will be able to view 3D reconstructions of structures and historic buildings as they originally appeared centuries ago. The technology effectively layers historical imagery and interactive elements onto the current landscape, offering a dynamic and immersive educational experience.
Organizers hope this blend of modern technology and local history will attract a wider audience, particularly younger generations who are accustomed to digital interaction. The initiative aims to make the stories of Marietta’s founding and its role in the Northwest Territory more accessible and engaging. By bridging the gap between the 18th century and the 21st, the augmented reality program promises to transform a simple museum visit into an unforgettable journey through time.
