China's leading science institute has kicked off a research program focused on technology that could eventually lead to a sea-skimming hypersonic missile. If successful, such a weapon would pose a serious challenge to US naval forces and missile defense systems.
The concept combines two difficult threats. Hypersonic missiles travel at speeds above Mach 5, making them hard to intercept. Sea-skimming missiles fly extremely low, hugging the ocean surface to evade radar. Merging these traits would create a weapon that is both fast and stealthy, reducing the time a ship has to react.
Current US defenses, like the Aegis system and Standard Missile interceptors, are designed to handle either high-speed ballistic threats or low-flying cruise missiles. A hypersonic sea-skimmer would blur that line. It could approach at low altitude, then pop up or maneuver unpredictably at the last moment, overwhelming existing countermeasures.
The research program, run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will explore materials and guidance systems that can withstand the extreme heat and pressure of low-altitude hypersonic flight. Engineers also need to solve the problem of stable control when flying just meters above waves.
While the project is still in early stages, it signals China's intent to field a weapon that could complicate US naval operations in the Pacific. For now, the US is investing in new sensors and directed-energy weapons, like lasers, to counter such threats. But a practical sea-skimming hypersonic missile remains years away, if it ever becomes operational.
