AI chatbots are giving out people’s real phone numbers

People are discovering that Google's AI-powered search and chatbot tools are surfacing their personal phone numbers without permission, and there seems to be no straightforward way to stop it. Multiple users have reported that asking the AI for contact details of individuals or businesses sometimes returns real, unlisted phone numbers that were never meant to be public. The problem appears to stem from the AI scraping and synthesizing information from various sources, including old forum posts, business directories, and even private data that was never intended for wide distribution.

One affected person described finding their own mobile number returned by Google's AI when a stranger asked for a way to reach them. The number had been shared in a private message years ago, but the AI somehow connected it to the person's name. Others have reported similar incidents, with the AI pulling up contact information that was only ever shared in closed groups or behind login walls. The issue raises serious privacy concerns, especially since there is no clear opt-out mechanism for individuals who do not want their data exposed by AI systems.

Google has acknowledged the problem in statements, saying they are working on improving the AI's ability to distinguish between public and private information. But for now, users are left with few options. Some have tried requesting removal through standard data removal tools, only to find the AI still returns the information. Privacy advocates are calling for stricter regulations on how AI models handle personal data, arguing that current laws are not equipped to deal with this new technology. Until a fix arrives, anyone with a phone number online may want to assume it could be surfaced by an AI at any time.
