A small medical device company has received permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin testing a brain implant designed to treat depression. Motif Neurotech, the Texas-based startup behind the technology, plans to launch human trials later this year.
The implant is about the size of a blueberry and is placed under the skull, directly on the surface of the brain. It works by delivering targeted electrical pulses to areas involved in mood regulation. In theory, the device would function like a continuous glucose monitor for the brain, providing ongoing stimulation rather than requiring patients to manually activate it.
Current treatments for depression, such as medication and talk therapy, do not work for everyone. For patients with treatment-resistant depression, more invasive options like deep brain stimulation exist, but they require major surgery and involve wires running through the skull. Motif's approach aims to be less invasive. The device is powered wirelessly by an external patch worn behind the ear, eliminating the need for batteries inside the head.
The company has already tested the implant in a small number of patients in a pilot study. Those results showed the device was safe and could be turned on and off without causing side effects. The upcoming FDA-approved trial will expand the study to more participants to measure effectiveness.
If successful, the implant could offer a new option for the roughly 30 percent of depression patients who do not respond to existing treatments. Motif expects the first trial participants to be enrolled within the next few months.
