Facial Recognition Rollout Expands at Airports, but Logan Timeline Remains Vague

The Transportation Security Administration is moving forward with a new generation of security screening tools, and facial recognition sits at the center of the plan. According to TSA Administrator David Cummins, the technology could eventually let travelers pass through an electronic gate without pulling out a driver's license or a boarding pass. Instead, a camera would match a passenger's face against a stored image, confirming identity in seconds.

The agency has tested similar systems at several airports over the past few years, and Cummins said the results support broader deployment. Travelers who opt in typically pause briefly at a kiosk, where a photo is captured and compared with data already on file. Officers still supervise the process, and passengers can ask for a traditional ID check instead.

What remains unsettled is timing. Cummins did not offer a firm schedule for when the equipment would arrive at Boston Logan International Airport. The airport handles millions of passengers each year, and adding new lanes involves coordination with airlines, terminal operators, and state officials. Privacy advocates have also raised questions about how long images are kept and who can access them.

For now, the rollout continues at a measured pace. Travelers at Logan should expect the current mix of manual checks and limited pilot programs to stay in place until the agency finalizes its plans.
