Voyager Space has landed a contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop advanced solid rocket propellant technology. The agreement, announced earlier this week, tasks the company with pushing the boundaries of propulsion systems used in military and commercial launch vehicles.
The contract falls under DARPA's broader effort to modernize solid rocket motors, which have remained largely unchanged for decades. Voyager will focus on creating propellants that offer higher performance, improved safety, and greater manufacturing efficiency. The company plans to leverage its experience in commercial spaceflight to bring fresh approaches to the problem.
Solid rocket propellants are a critical component for many defense systems, including intercontinental ballistic missiles and space launch boosters. However, the supply chain for these materials has become fragile, and the technology has not kept pace with advances in liquid propulsion. DARPA wants to change that by funding research into new chemical formulations and production methods.
Voyager's work will include testing new propellant mixtures and developing scalable manufacturing processes. The company did not disclose the exact value of the contract but said it would involve collaboration with government labs and other industry partners. This marks another step in Voyager's expansion beyond its core business of building space stations and cargo modules.
The project is expected to run for several years, with initial demonstrations of the new propellant technology planned by late 2026. Success could lead to wider adoption across the defense and commercial space sectors.
