A new technology partnership between Stellantis, Wayve, and Uber marks another major move in the fast-moving race to bring driverless taxis to the streets. The deal, announced this week, combines the strengths of a global automaker, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence startup, and the world's largest ride-hailing platform.
Under the agreement, Wayve's AI-powered driving system will be integrated into Stellantis vehicles. Uber will then use those vehicles on its network, aiming to offer autonomous rides to passengers. This three-way collaboration is designed to speed up the development and deployment of self-driving cars, a goal that has attracted billions of dollars in investment from automakers and tech companies alike.
For Stellantis, the partnership is a chance to stay competitive in a market where traditional car sales are being reshaped by software and services. For Wayve, a British company known for its "embodied AI" approach that learns from real-world driving data, it provides a direct path to mass production and real-world use. And for Uber, which has long sought to replace human drivers with machines, it offers a fresh shot at a goal that has proven difficult and expensive.
The announcement comes as other players like Waymo and Cruise push ahead with their own robotaxi services in select cities. While no specific launch date or city was named, the partnership signals that the industry is moving from research labs to commercial reality.
