TSX Closer: Index Turns Higher as Technology And Base Metals Gain

The S&P/TSX Composite Index had dipped into negative territory during the morning session before turning higher, finishing the day just above where it started. The late rebound showed buyers were willing to step in despite lingering uncertainty about global growth and interest rate policy.

Technology stocks led the advance, tracking a broader rally among their U.S. counterparts. Investors rotated back into growth names after several sessions of caution, betting that demand for software, semiconductors and digital services will hold up even if the broader economy cools.

Base metals producers also moved up as copper and other industrial metals prices firmed. Mining companies benefited from renewed optimism about infrastructure spending and supply constraints that have kept inventories tight.

Energy and financials were mixed, with oil prices wavering and bank shares little changed. Defensive sectors such as utilities and consumer staples lagged, suggesting investors were leaning toward riskier assets by the closing bell.

Trading volume was moderate. Market watchers said the index remains sensitive to fresh economic data and central bank commentary in the days ahead, which could determine whether the rebound holds or fades.
