Tremonton Garland PD opts not to use license plate readers after testing technology

The Tremonton Garland Police Department has officially decided against adopting license plate recognition technology, following a period of testing that sparked debate within the community. The agency had piloted a single reader device to evaluate its effectiveness, but officials have now confirmed the tool will not be integrated into daily patrol operations.

Chief of Police noted that while the technology performed as expected from a technical standpoint, the department weighed concerns about privacy, data retention, and public perception. The trial period allowed officers to assess how the system handled real-world traffic flow, but the final decision came down to whether the benefits justified the potential drawbacks.

Residents had voiced mixed opinions during the testing phase. Some appreciated the potential for recovering stolen vehicles or identifying suspects in active cases, while others worried about constant surveillance and the possibility of data misuse. The department says it listened to those concerns and chose to prioritize community trust over the convenience of automated scanning.

The decision does not mean the department is closing the door on future technology. Officials stated they will continue to review new tools as they emerge, but any future adoption would require clearer policies on data storage, access limits, and public oversight. For now, officers will rely on traditional methods such as manual plate checks during traffic stops and routine patrols.
