Student-Led Farm Project Brings Fresh Food to Campus

Two graduate students in architecture have turned a patch of campus ground into a working farm, and in the process they are redefining what farm-fresh food means for their university community.

The project, known as MIT Farm, began as an experiment in urban agriculture. What started with a few planted beds has grown into a productive operation that supplies fresh produce while giving the students hands-on training in sustainable growing methods. The pair balances their architecture studies with daily farming duties, from planting and watering to harvesting and distributing food.

Their work highlights a growing interest in urban farming among students who want to understand where their meals come from and reduce the distance between grower and eater. The farm also serves as a living classroom, showing how unused space can be transformed into something productive and educational.

For the two founders, the effort is about more than vegetables. It is a way to test ideas about design, community, and food systems in a real setting. As the project expands, it offers a model for other campuses looking to combine practical learning with fresh, locally grown food.
