Solidion Technology Inc. saw its stock price more than double on Thursday after the company announced a new battery platform built for extreme conditions. Shares jumped roughly 200% following the reveal of a patented system designed to power satellites, lunar missions, and even AI data centers located in low Earth orbit.
The platform addresses a key challenge in space exploration: keeping batteries functional in freezing temperatures, high radiation, and vacuum environments. Solidion says its technology can maintain performance where standard lithium-ion cells typically fail. The company is positioning the platform for both government space agencies and private aerospace firms.
Beyond orbital applications, Solidion noted that the same battery chemistry could support high-altitude drones and defense equipment. The announcement marks a major shift for the company, which has largely focused on electric vehicle battery materials in the past.
Trading volume exploded on the news, with millions of shares changing hands compared to the stock's usual thin daily volume. Despite the massive single-day gain, the stock remains well below its highs from earlier years. Analysts caution that while the technology sounds promising, commercial deployment in space is still years away and will require significant testing and certification.
