SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California has set a new benchmark for integrated stadium technology, according to its designers at American architecture firm HKS. The venue, which opened in 2020, now holds the title of the most expensive stadium ever built, with construction costs exceeding five billion dollars.
Central to the stadium's technological achievement is its center-hung videoboard, one of the largest in the world. The dual-sided, 360-degree display spans nearly 70,000 square feet and hangs 122 feet above the field. It uses 4K resolution across all its panels, allowing every seat in the house to see clear replays and stats. The board is not just a screen; it is a structural marvel, supported by a lightweight steel frame that weighs over 2.2 million pounds.
Beyond the videoboard, the stadium integrates technology into the fan experience from the moment they arrive. A mobile app controls seat lighting, orders food for delivery to the seat, and provides augmented reality navigation. The roof, a translucent canopy made of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, covers the entire stadium and field, creating an indoor-outdoor feel while protecting fans from the elements. This roof also supports an advanced sound system designed to eliminate echoes and deliver clear audio to every section.
HKS designed the stadium with future upgrades in mind. The infrastructure supports 5G connectivity and can handle the data demands of large events like the Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympics. The result is a venue that blends architecture, engineering, and digital systems into a single, seamless experience.
