Sensor for Seniors: Fixing a hidden flaw in wearable technology could improve prosthetics, rehabilitation

Skin-interfaced wearable health technology has a hidden flaw that limits its effectiveness. Many of these systems work best on smooth, firm skin, which is more common on younger bodies. That is a problem because older adults are often the ones who need these devices the most.

As people age, their skin changes. It becomes thinner, drier, and develops wrinkles. These natural changes can seriously impact how well a wearable device stays in contact with the skin. When the contact is poor, the data quality suffers. A sensor that reads heart rate, hydration, or muscle signals may give inaccurate readings or fail to work at all.

Researchers are now looking at this issue more closely. They want to design sensors that adapt to the unique texture and condition of aging skin. This is not just about making a fitness tracker more accurate for a senior. It has real implications for prosthetics and rehabilitation. If a sensor cannot read muscle signals correctly because of dry or wrinkled skin, a prosthetic limb may not respond properly. The same goes for rehab devices that rely on precise feedback to guide recovery after a stroke or injury.

By fixing this hidden flaw, engineers could make wearable technology truly universal. The goal is to create sensors that work just as well on a 75-year-old as they do on a 25-year-old. That shift could open the door to better mobility aids, smarter health monitoring, and more effective physical therapy for the aging population.
