A Russian citizen has been handed over to American authorities from Sweden to answer federal charges in an alleged international procurement network that funneled sensitive electronic components to Russia, officials announced Thursday.
The defendant, identified as a 52-year-old man, is accused of orchestrating a scheme to acquire US-origin technology with military applications and illegally export it to Russia, bypassing strict American export controls imposed after the invasion of Ukraine. Prosecutors say the operation involved multiple front companies and intermediaries across several countries to obscure the final destination of the goods.
Court documents allege the components, which include advanced semiconductors and other dual-use electronics, are subject to US export restrictions because they can be used in military systems such as radar, surveillance equipment, and guided weapons. The scheme reportedly operated for months, generating significant profits while evading detection.
The extradition follows a lengthy investigation involving US and Swedish authorities. If convicted, the defendant faces severe penalties, including decades in prison and substantial fines. Officials described the case as part of a broader effort to disrupt illicit supply chains that support Russia's military capabilities.
The suspect is expected to appear in federal court in the coming days. His legal representation has not yet commented on the charges.
