A newly published patent application suggests Sony is developing its own frame generation technology, with the PlayStation 6 appearing to be the most likely destination, even though no specific console is mentioned in the document. The filing, titled "Generation Super Sampling" and published on October 15 under US 2026/0320740 A1, lists Sony engineer Denis among its inventors.
The patent describes a system that generates additional frames between traditionally rendered ones, aiming to boost perceived smoothness without requiring the full cost of rendering every frame from scratch. This approach mirrors what competing platforms and GPU makers have already brought to market, but Sony's version would be tailored to its own hardware ecosystem.
Frame generation has become a major talking point in gaming hardware over the past few years. It can make demanding titles feel more responsive on modest hardware, though it also raises questions about image quality and input latency. Sony's patent suggests the company is looking at ways to address those tradeoffs internally rather than relying on third-party solutions.
If the technology does make its way into the PlayStation 6, it could give Sony a stronger hand in the next console generation. For now, the patent is just a filing, and Sony has not confirmed any plans. Still, the document offers a rare glimpse into what the company's engineers are working on behind closed doors.
