PAR Technology, a company known for its restaurant and retail software, has started using Databricks Genie to bring AI-powered analytics into its data platform. The move is meant to help retailers and restaurant chains make quicker decisions based on loyalty program data, sales trends, and store performance without waiting on a data team.

The idea is simple. Instead of having managers or franchise owners dig through dashboards or ask IT for custom reports, they can now ask questions in plain language and get answers almost instantly. Genie, which is Databricks' conversational AI tool, connects directly to PAR's data lakehouse. That means the system can pull up numbers on customer spending habits, menu item performance, or even compare one store against another in seconds.

What makes this different from older business intelligence tools is that it does not just show static charts. The AI can explain why a certain metric changed, suggest what might be driving a sales drop, or flag unusual patterns in loyalty redemptions. For example, a regional manager could ask why breakfast sales dipped at a specific location last Tuesday, and the system would break down the likely causes, such as weather, staffing, or a competitor promotion nearby.

PAR says the goal is to reduce the time between spotting a problem and acting on it. In the past, getting a clear answer often took days because it required a data analyst to write a query and format the results. Now, the same insight is available on demand, which helps with things like inventory ordering, staffing schedules, and targeted marketing campaigns.

The company also notes that the integration is built on its existing data foundation, so there is no need for retailers to replace their current systems. PAR handles the heavy lifting of connecting the data sources, cleaning the data, and making sure the AI has access to accurate, up-to-date information.

Early tests have shown that store operators are using the tool more than expected, especially for daily check-ins and weekly reviews. Some have even started using it to set performance goals for their teams.
