Oklo buys nuclear technology company ARMEC, advancing reactor capabilities

Oklo has announced the acquisition of ARMEC, a Tennessee-based company specializing in precision manufacturing and engineering. The deal is aimed at boosting Oklo's internal capabilities for its advanced nuclear reactor designs and fuel manufacturing operations.

The purchase brings ARMEC's expertise in high-tolerance fabrication and assembly directly under Oklo's control. This move is expected to accelerate the development of Oklo's compact fast reactor technology, which is designed to use recycled nuclear fuel. By integrating ARMEC's workforce and facilities, Oklo hopes to reduce its reliance on external suppliers and streamline the production of key reactor components.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Oklo's leadership emphasized that owning the manufacturing process will help control costs and improve quality assurance as the company works toward regulatory approval and eventual deployment of its first commercial reactors. The company is currently pursuing a combined license application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a plant in Idaho.

The acquisition also supports Oklo's broader strategy to build a vertically integrated supply chain for advanced nuclear energy. With ARMEC's capabilities, Oklo aims to handle more of the fabrication work in-house, from specialized metal parts to complex assemblies needed for both the reactor core and the fuel recycling system. This approach is seen as a way to avoid delays common in the nuclear industry when relying on third-party vendors.

Oklo's reactor design is part of a new wave of smaller, modular nuclear plants that promise safer operation and lower upfront costs compared to traditional large-scale reactors. The company has also been working on securing fuel sources, including a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop fuel from existing nuclear waste.
