The race to build faster AI systems has long centered on chips. GPUs, high-bandwidth memory, advanced packaging and software stacks have absorbed most of the attention. But as AI moves from single servers to rack-scale supercomputers, a different bottleneck is emerging: shuttling massive amounts of data between thousands of components without drowning in signal loss, heat and power draw.
A display tied to NVIDIA's MGX ecosystem at the 2026 Open Compute Project Global Summit hinted at how the company plans to address that. The exhibit showed two pieces of hardware: an NVLink PTFE board and an ultra dense interconnect cable cartridge. Beside them stood the names of 13 companies working in PCB manufacturing, advanced materials, connectors and cable assemblies.
These parts may look mundane next to NVIDIA's newest GPUs. They are not. They represent two paths to the same goal, delivering extreme bandwidth while keeping signal integrity intact and costs under control. PTFE, a material better known for nonstick pans, turns out to have electrical properties that suit high-speed boards well. Dense cable cartridges tackle the same problem from the wiring side.
For the supply chain, the shift matters. Value is spreading beyond the usual chipmakers into materials, connectors and assembly. Companies that once sat on the edge of the computing boom may find themselves closer to its center.
