New studies show phones may lead to lower fertility rates

A pair of recently published studies point to evidence linking the increase in digital technology, cell phones in particular, to the decrease of fertility rates. One of the studies, published in a peer-reviewed journal, analyzed data from thousands of couples over a multi-year period. Researchers found that men who reported higher daily phone usage had significantly lower sperm counts and reduced sperm motility compared to those who used their phones less frequently.

The second study focused on women, examining the potential impact of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted by phones. The results indicated that prolonged exposure to these fields, especially when phones were carried close to the body, was associated with a higher likelihood of ovulatory disorders and longer time-to-pregnancy. While the exact biological mechanisms are still under investigation, scientists suspect that the heat generated by phones and the electromagnetic radiation may disrupt cellular processes in reproductive tissues.

Experts caution that the findings do not prove direct causation, but they add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that modern lifestyle habits may be influencing fertility trends. The studies controlled for factors like age, smoking, and obesity, strengthening the case that phone use itself could be a contributing factor. As global fertility rates continue to decline, these results may prompt further research into how everyday technology affects human health.
