Students across Lafayette Parish are starting their mornings with a quick scan of their school ID before climbing aboard the bus. The new system, now active on many routes, is designed to give parents a clearer picture of their child's commute and tighten security around school transportation.
Instead of just checking names off a list, bus drivers now use a handheld scanner that reads each student's ID card. That information is instantly logged, letting families know exactly when their child got on the bus and at what stop. For parents waiting at the curb, this means no more guessing if the bus has already passed or if their child missed the pickup.
School officials say the technology is about more than just tracking. It also helps ensure that only enrolled students are on the bus. If a card does not match the route or the bus, the driver gets an alert. That extra step could stop a student from boarding the wrong bus or someone without permission from getting on.
The district has been testing the system for a few weeks and is now expanding it to more routes. Parents can access the information through the same app they already use for bus delays and route changes. There is no word yet on whether the system will be required for all students, but officials are encouraging families to make sure their children carry their IDs every day.
For now, the focus is on making the daily ride smoother and safer for everyone involved.
