A Metro councilmember is pushing for technology he says would help control loud noise from cars and late-night bars. The proposal aims to clarify existing noise ordinances while introducing automated enforcement tools to catch repeat offenders.
Councilman Bob Mendes says current rules are too vague and hard to enforce. He wants to install sound-monitoring devices in problem areas, especially near entertainment districts where residents have complained about booming car stereos and rowdy bar crowds after midnight. The devices would measure decibel levels and automatically issue citations to violators.
The plan also includes clearer language in the city code. Right now, officers must use their own judgment to decide if a noise is "unreasonable." Mendes says that leads to inconsistent enforcement and frustrated neighbors. The new ordinance would set specific decibel limits for different times of day and zones of the city.
Some bar owners worry the technology could hurt business. They argue that live music and outdoor patios are part of Nashville's identity. But Mendes says the goal is not to silence the city, just to stop the worst offenders. He points to similar programs in other cities that have reduced complaints without shutting down nightlife.
The council is expected to debate the proposal next month. If approved, a pilot program could launch in the Gulch and Lower Broadway areas by summer.
