The INDEX Biennial of Art and Technology in Braga is taking a sharp turn into political philosophy with its latest theme. The event's curators are questioning the very foundation of democratic decision-making, suggesting that the traditional concept of majority rule has lost its weight in an era of deep public distrust.
"Majority rule no longer means anything when nobody trusts anybody," the biennial's statement reads. The organizers argue that simply following the vote of 51 percent of participants feels increasingly absurd. They point out that no idea is now considered too foolish to gain traction, and that the system once meant to represent collective will has become hollow.
The biennial, known for blending art with critical technology discourse, is using this platform to challenge visitors. The exhibition space in Braga will feature works that explore how digital tools and social media have reshaped public opinion. Artists are expected to present pieces that visualize the breakdown of consensus and the rise of fragmented belief systems.
This year's edition aims to provoke a conversation about what happens when the numbers no longer reflect shared values. The curators want attendees to walk away questioning whether a simple majority can ever capture the complexity of modern society. The event runs through the fall, with installations, talks, and performances all centered on this unsettling question.
