Technology gives us power. Agency determines what we do with it.
That tension sits at the heart of modern self-governance. Digital tools have made it easier for communities to organize, vote, share information, and hold leaders accountable. A single person with a phone can document an injustice, rally neighbors, or launch a petition that reaches thousands in hours. The barrier to collective action has never been lower.
Yet access to tools is not the same as the ability to use them well. Self-governance requires more than connectivity. It demands judgment, patience, and a willingness to engage with people who disagree. Platforms built for speed often reward outrage over reflection. Algorithms that maximize attention can push communities toward division rather than consensus.
The real question is not whether technology can support self-rule. It clearly can. The question is whether people will choose to wield that power with intention. Agency means deciding what kind of digital spaces we want, how we verify information, and when we step away from the screen to talk face to face.
Self-governance has always been a practice, not a product. Technology simply raises the stakes. Used carelessly, it fragments. Used deliberately, it can strengthen the very communities it touches.
