The big difference is speed. The system can capture high-quality images in a fraction of the time traditional MRIs take. That matters for patients who struggle to stay still or hold their breath during a scan, which is common in cardiac imaging. Faster scans also mean more patients can be seen in a day, cutting down wait times.

For cancer care, the clearer images help radiologists spot smaller tumors or see exactly how a tumor is responding to treatment. For heart patients, the MRI gives detailed views of heart muscle and blood flow, which helps cardiologists plan procedures like valve repairs or bypass surgery with more confidence.

Intermountain says the technology is part of a broader push to bring cutting-edge tools to the region without patients having to travel out of state. The hospital is already using the system on a regular basis, and staff have been trained to get the most out of its features. While the machine is a major upgrade, the hospital notes it is not a replacement for other imaging tools like CT scans or ultrasounds, but rather an addition that fills in gaps where soft tissue detail is critical.

The rollout is being watched closely by other health systems in the mountain west, and Intermountain expects the technology to become more common in the next few years as older machines reach the end of their lifespan. For now, patients at the Murray campus have access to something that was previously only available at a handful of research hospitals.
