San Antonio residents now have a more powerful way to stay ahead of dangerous weather. Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority have rolled out a new interactive flood safety system designed to replace aging infrastructure with real-time, user-friendly technology.
The centerpiece of the initiative is an online mapping tool that allows residents to see current river levels, rainfall data, and flood warnings across the region. Unlike older systems that relied on delayed reports, this platform updates continuously, giving people a live picture of conditions in their neighborhood. Officials say the goal is to help families make faster, smarter decisions when storms hit.
The upgrade also includes new sensors and monitoring stations along key waterways. These devices feed data directly into the map, improving accuracy for both emergency responders and the public. The River Authority noted that the old equipment was prone to failure during severe weather, leaving gaps in coverage when it was needed most.
Bexar County commissioners approved funding for the project as part of a broader push to modernize flood preparedness. The tool is free to access and does not require a login. Users can zoom into specific areas or view the entire county at once.
Local leaders emphasized that while technology helps, it is not a substitute for personal caution. They urge residents to sign up for emergency alerts and never drive through flooded roads. The new map is meant to complement, not replace, common sense during a storm.
