Thirty students from Toconao and San Pedro de Atacama joined the opening sessions of a special edition of the Atacama Makers program, which for the first time is taking place at the ALMA observatory grounds this year. The initiative introduces young people to programming, electronics, and hands-on innovation, guiding them to build practical technological tools that respond to real needs in their own communities.
Over several days, the students worked in small teams, learning how to design circuits, write basic code, and assemble simple devices. The goal is not just to teach technical skills, but to show how science and local knowledge can come together to solve everyday problems. Some of the challenges the participants chose to tackle relate to water management, solar energy use, and improving communication in remote areas.
The program also emphasizes the value of territory, encouraging students to think about their desert environment, its resources, and its limitations. Organizers say the idea is to make technology feel closer and more useful to daily life, especially for young people living in small towns near the observatory.
Local teachers and community members have welcomed the initiative, noting that it opens new opportunities for students who rarely get access to such equipment or training. The sessions will continue over the coming weeks, with a final showcase where each group presents its prototype. The program expects to expand next year to include more schools from the surrounding area.
