Big Technology founder Alex Kantrowitz offered a blunt assessment of the artificial intelligence competition this week, arguing that OpenAI is pursuing far more ambitious moves than Meta as new entrants continue to reshape the market.
Speaking during a segment on Closing Bell, Kantrowitz contrasted the two companies' approaches. He suggested OpenAI keeps pushing into unfamiliar territory with large, high risk projects, while Meta has largely focused on integrating AI into its existing products and refining models that support its advertising and social platforms. That difference in strategy, he said, matters as the sector grows more crowded.
The comments arrive at a moment when the AI landscape is shifting quickly. Fresh competitors are launching models at a rapid pace, pressing established players to justify their spending and show tangible results. Kantrowitz noted that the pressure is forcing every major company to reconsider how aggressively it wants to commit resources to research, infrastructure, and new products.
He also pointed out that being first to market does not guarantee long term dominance. Execution, distribution, and the ability to attract talent will decide which companies hold their ground. Still, in his view, OpenAI's willingness to take larger swings gives it a distinct edge in shaping where the technology goes next, even if those bets carry real risk.
The takeaway from his remarks is simple. The AI race is no longer just about who has the best model today. It is about who is willing to gamble on what comes after.
